Frequently Asked Questions Concerning these Changes:

Where do I vote?

All Highland Township voters will be voting at Milford High School, 2380 S. Milford Rd, Highland, MI 48357 .  Voters will enter at the Pools entrance near the Northwest corner of the building.  There will be signage to direct voters to the correct area.

Why are there changes to the Township's voting precincts?

Highland has consolidated its eight precincts into five precincts, a measure that increases efficiency, reduces costs, and changes precinct number and the polling location for all Highland voters.

The majority of Highland voters now vote by mail or during the nine-day early voting period, which has greatly reduced the number of people at polling places on Election Day.  In Highland's November 2024 election, only 32% of the votes were cast in person on Election Day compared to 70% in November of 2016 (before no-excuse-necessary absentee and early voting were options)

Will voters receive identification cards with their new precinct number?

Yes, voters were mailed voter identification cards confirming their new precinct and polling location assignments in March of 2026.  The information is also available immediately online at mi.gov/vote by clicking the "Am I registered?" option.

Is there a map showing the updated precinct boundaries?

Yes.  A map showing the precinct boundaries is available here

How were the new precinct boundaries and polling location determined?

The new precinct boundaries were drawn to be as compact and contiguous as practical while using major roads as borders to the extent that is possible while keeping within the legal limits of no more than 4,999 active voters per precinct.  The Highland Township Election Commission approved the consolidation by a unanimous vote in December of 2025.   The new polling location designation was unanimously approved by the Township board at the February 2026 board meeting.

Why are all five precincts voting at Milford High School?

Prior to this year, we were utilizing two elementary schools and two churches for voting.  The elementary school locations were challenging as it related to security.  Workers need to be able to enter the building on the day before, the day of, and the day after elections.  Even if schools were always closed on Election Day, accessing the precinct areas for set up involved difficult scheduling decisions.  Milford High School now has a space that is completely separate from the student areas, due to the repurposing of the space that formerly housed the leisure pool.   Since fewer people are voting on Election Day, we will be able to accommodate all voters in the one location.   In addition, there will be significant additional savings for the cost of equipment by having all precincts voting in one location.   Lastly, the support needs of the precinct operations will be much more manageable when all of them are in one building.

How have the Township's precinct and polling location changes been communicated to residents?

In addition to discussions at public meetings, the changes have been publicized via the Township e-newsletters, social media, Naturally Connected magazine, and on our website.  New Voter Information Cards have been mailed to each voter.   The details can also be found at mi.gov/vote . Signage will be placed on Election Day to direct voters to the new location.

Will this change impact in-person voting wait times on Election Day?

Steps are being taken to provide for multiple check-in stations for each precinct, which will reduce the amount of time it takes to be issued a ballot.  There may be a slight delay while voters are being directed to their correct precinct check in station.  Voters are encouraged to bring their Voter Information Card with them, so they can quickly determine which station they need to go to.   Assistance will be provided for voters who do not know their precinct number.    Voters are encouraged to prepare for voting by obtaining a sample/preview ballot so that they can be fully prepared to vote.   These are available approximately one month before each election at the Township office or by visiting mi.gov/vote

Where should voters park at Milford High School?

Voters will use the pools entrance near the Northwest corner of the building.  There are two parking areas nearby, and there will be signage to direct voters to the correct areas.

Are other municipalities consolidating precincts?

Yes.  Clerks across Michigan are consolidating election precincts in response to a significant decline in in-person voting on Election Day.  The cost savings for technology and staffing is significant.  This decision is conserving Township resources so that other needs can be covered.
