In 2026, we have two elections:
- August 4th Primary Election
Remote Registration Ends: 7/20; Absentee Voting dates: 6/25-8/3; Early Voting dates: 7/25-8/2; - November 3rd General Election
Remote Registration Ends: 10/19; Absentee Voting dates: 9/24-11/2; Early Voting dates: 10/24-11/1;
Here are some voting tips to keep in mind:
• Visit Mi.gov/vote for helpful info including absentee applications, voter registration, early voting details, sample ballots, and absentee ballot tracking.
• Get a sample ballot ahead of the election to pre-select your choices to make it easier and faster when you vote in person. They are available at Mi.gov/Vote
Voter Registration:
• Eligible citizens can register to vote remotely (online or by mail) up to 15 days prior to the election. After that deadline and up through election day, registration must be done in person at the Clerk’s office with proof of residency.
• If you haven’t voted since the last time you moved, check to see if your address is up to date at Mi.gov/vote. You can update your address at that site as well.
Voting Options:
There are 3 options for voting:
* Early in-person voting at our early voting site
* Absentee voting
* Election Day voting at the precinct
Early Voting:
• Highland's early voting site is at the Township Hall, 205 N. John St. Early voting runs for 9 days starting the second Saturday prior to the election until Sunday just before the election, 8:30am-4:30pm except Thursday, Noon-8pm.
• Alternately, you can vote at the Oakland County central early voting site the Waterford Oaks Activity Center, 2800 Watkins Lake Rd, Waterford.
• Please note, the lines may get long in a big election. Try to visit during a weekday if possible.
Absentee Voting:
• Absentee applications can be completed at MI.gov/vote or obtained from the Clerk's office. We recommend getting started with the application as soon as possible, to make sure there's time for mailing ballots back and forth.
• Permanent Ballot option – selecting this option means that we will automatically send you a ballot for every future election. It’s important if you choose this option to be very conscientious of the upcoming election schedule and notify the Clerk’s office if you will be out of town so we can mail your ballot to the correct location. The post office will not forward ballots.
• If submitting a paper absentee application, please fill it out completely and sign it! We recommend submitting applications via one of our drop boxes – for sake of speed and reliability. The drop box locations are listed below.
• After you apply for a ballot, watch for the blue ballot envelope in your mailbox. Absentee ballots will begin being sent out about 40 days prior to each election. If you applied and don't receive your ballot at least 2 weeks before the election, please contact our office for assistance.
• Ballots must be received at the Township Clerk’s office BY ELECTION DAY in order to be counted (except for military/overseas voters).
• Ballot return options:
1) Bring your ballot to the early voting site or precinct and tabulate it yourself. Bring your photo ID for a faster check-in.
2) Drop box - there are now two locations:
*Township Hall - 205 N. John St
*Fire Station #2 - 2550 E. Wardlow Rd
3) Mail: please allow at least a week (or more if possible). No postage required.
• When the clerk’s office processes your returned absentee ballot, the State’s Qualified Voter File system is updated to show if the ballot has been accepted, which you can check at Mi.gov/vote. Your ballot is stored in a secure location until election day, when the absentee counting board will tabulate the ballots.
Election Day:
All Highland precincts are now voting at Milford High School at 2380 S. Milford Rd. Follow the signs toward the Pools and Fitness area around the back of the building. Voting hours are 7:00 am through 8:00 pm. Bring your photo ID for a faster check-in.
